The San Antonio Spurs are not ready to move on from De'Aaron Fox just yet, but they are aware that the clock is ticking and that Dylan Harper is ready to take on a bigger role.
The San Antonio Spurs have the most promising Big Three in NBA history.
Victor Wembanyama has GOAT potential and is already the best player in the league after only three seasons. Stephon Castle is among the best perimeter defenders in the NBA, and his bruising frame allows him to get to his spots with ease. Dylan Harper, meanwhile, is the least experienced of the trio, although he has already played winning basketball and is only getting started.
For now, the Spurs remain committed to De'Aaron Fox as a veteran presence in the starting lineup, although Harper is putting a lot of pressure on San Antonio and is deserving of a bigger role.
The team, it seems, agrees with the fans.
Dylan Harper Has Passed Up De'Aaron Fox
There is a world where Fox is a more reliable, steady player. There is no longer a world where he's a better player.
In the NBA Finals, Harper averaged six more points per game than Fox. He was less turnover-prone, more efficient from all over the floor, and didn't make any head-scratching, game-losing plays.
"The Spurs internally believe Dylan Harper is their second-best player," said ESPN's Brian Windhorst. "I'm not saying Mitch Johnson's gonna come out and say that; he shouldn't come out and say that. That's not a slight on De'Aaron Fox. That's not a slight on Stephon Castle. Harper is a stud. You talk to other front offices in the league; they say the same thing. I mean, look. He's a number two pick in the draft. Of course, he's a stud. And he only got better as the season went along."
Now, this is simply Harper living up to the expectations the league had before he was drafted. It wasn't supposed to happen this quickly, but he was eventually supposed to be one of the better point guards in the NBA.
Despite the challenges that come with balancing minutes between Harper and Fox and the veteran's maximum contract, being ahead of schedule is always a good thing.
To fans, it's been apparent for months that Harper is the better player. The team, it seems, is on the same page.
