We are closing in on the start of the new NBA season for the defending Western Conference champion San Antonio Spurs.

Are we also closing in. on having to deal with injury problems that might impact the beginning of the schedule?

As Harris is being evaluated, he did not suit up for the Spurs' Silver & Black scrimmage on Sunday.

What's the specific issue here?

Harris, who signed a two-year, $31 million contract in this year's free agency to join the Spurs, is dealing with a calf injury.

Once this get cleared up, Harris - after spending the past two seasons with the Detroit Pistons - figures to become a major add to a Spurs team fresh off its run to the 2026 NBA Finals.

Harris averaged 13.3 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 2.5 assists across 63 appearances to help the Pistons' 60-win season. He shot 46.9 percent from the field and 36.8 percent from the arc, while averaging about 28 minutes per contest.

He is expected to give the Spurs a physical front-court helper and a veteran presence.

But for now?

We bet the Spurs will be OK.

If Harris really does miss some time, San Antonio will still rely on featuring the MVP candidate Victor Wembanyama and his array of talented teammates, including Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper working in the backcourt.

The Spurs will play a five-game preseason schedule, beginning on Oct. 8 at home against the Atlanta Hawks. ... a time during which Harris' injury can be monitored while San Antonio builds toward a regular-season campaign that will eventually include him.
