Devin Vassell reveals rookie Dylan Harper’s hunger for a larger role, transforming Finals heartbreak into a fiery blueprint for San Antonio’s next championship pursuit alongside Victor Wembanyama.
The San Antonio Spurs may have fallen short in the NBA Finals, but one revelation from veteran guard Devin Vassell should have fans even more excited about the future.
Following the Spurs' five-game series loss to the New York Knicks, Vassell offered some insight into rookie guard Dylan Harper's mindset throughout the season. While praising Harper's emergence, Vassell admitted the young guard was not always satisfied with the role he was given during his first NBA campaign.
In his postgame press conference, Vassell said that the rookie guard "was upset with playing time and different roles he was in".
Yet when the Spurs needed him most during their playoff run, he delivered. Vassell went on to describe Harper as a "star in the making" and expressed confidence that the rookie will use the experience as motivation heading into the offseason.
It's easy to understand why Harper wanted more opportunities.
The rookie consistently flashed the ability to impact games as a scorer, playmaker, and rebounder. His performance on the NBA's biggest stage only strengthened the argument that he deserves a larger role moving forward. During the Finals, Harper averaged 18 points per game and capped the series with a 25-point effort in Game 5.
There were already questions throughout the postseason about whether Harper should have been on the floor more often in critical moments instead of De'Aaron Fox.
Now, Vassell's comments provide additional context.
Harper wasn't content simply being part of the rotation. He wanted more responsibility, more minutes, and a bigger opportunity to help the team win. That's exactly the mentality San Antonio should want from a player expected to become one of the franchise's cornerstones alongside Victor Wembanyama and Stephon Castle.
And with the potential moves that could happen this offseason, he could be getting the opportunities that he has been hoping for.
The Spurs may have ended the year with heartbreak, but Harper's dissatisfaction with being limited could end up being one of the best signs yet for the franchise's future. Players who believe they deserve more often push themselves to earn it. Harper appears determined to do exactly that.
