Spurs Receive Intriguing NBA Power Ranking to Begin Season cover image

This is a great number for the San Antonio Spurs.

One analyst believes the San Antonio Spurs are the 11th-best team in the NBA.

Andy Bailey of Bleacher Report ranked the Spurs 11th in his NBA power rankings to begin the 2025-26 season.

"There's really no track record to support the San Antonio Spurs' fringe top-10 placement here, but Victor Wembanyama looks ready to start competing for MVP awards," Bailey wrote. "And I don't mean just a few random fourth- or fifth-place votes. If he carries his young supporting cast to 50 wins and produces like he has this preseason, he might even steal a handful of real votes from the likes of Jokić and SGA.

"After a summer spent with Shaolin monks, astronauts and NBA legends, Wembanyama averaged 29.4 points, 15.2 rebounds, 6.9 assists, 3.5 blocks and 1.7 steals per 75 possessions in five exhibition games."

Wembanyama has career averages of 22.5 points, 10.8 rebounds, 3.8 assists, 1.2 steals and 3.7 blocks.

The budding superstar has led the NBA in blocks per game and total blocks for two consecutive seasons. It wouldn't surprise anyone if Wembanyama wins multiple Defensive Player of the Year Awards during his career.

Wembanyama made his first All-Star team last season. He averaged 24.3 points, 11.0 rebounds, 3.7 assists, 1.1 steals and 3.8 blocks.

The Spurs selected Wembanyama with the first overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft. Wembanyama appeared in 71 games during his rookie season. He averaged 21.4 points, 10.6 rebounds, 3.9 assists, 1.2 steals and 3.6 blocks and won the Rookie of the Year Award.

Wembanyama played in just 46 games last season, as a blood clot in his shoulder prematurely ended his second year in the NBA. He has fully recovered and had a terrific summer.

"My training this summer, it was brutal," Wembanyama said at Spurs media day. "This summer, I chose to do something much more violent. Maybe that takes away from some time I can spend on shooting the basketball, but it doesn’t matter. I wanted to get my body back.

"I can assure you, nobody has trained like I did this summer. And this is my best summer so far. I can tell the progress is just incredible. I feel better, I look stronger and the scale says I’m heavier. So everything is a green light."

The Spurs open the season against the Dallas Mavericks.
