The San Antonio Spurs have one roster spot left before the NBA season kicks off, and one overlooked rookie has been playing better than anyone expected.

The San Antonio Spurs have one roster spot remaining unclaimed. Originally, it seemed that they would bring back Kelly Olynyk on a minimum deal to round out the frontcourt. Over the summer, though, the veteran signed with a European club.

In training camp and the preseason, the Spurs have brought in multiple guys to compete for the last spot. Through three preseason games, two rookies have stood out. Tarris Reed Jr. looks like the best rebounder on the roster, although he's already signed to a standard deal.

Ja'Kobi Gillespie, meanwhile, is on a two-way contract. Picked 42nd overall out of Tennessee, he's averaged 12 points in the preseason and shot 46.2 percent from 3-point range. The Spurs have to consider him for the final spot.

Spurs' Signing Should Be Clear

If all goes well this season, there should not be a single minute outside of garbage time when one of De'Aaron Fox, Stephon Castle, and Dylan Harper is not on the floor.

However, injuries can happen, and behind those three stars, Jordan McLaughlin is the only reliable ball-handler on the roster. In college, Gillespie posted 5.4 assists per game in his senior season, and as his shooting improves, he's becoming a solid offensive force.

The Spurs know he has a long way to go, but for a "break in case of emergency" guy, you can't ask for much better.

"He's a guy that, in terms of what we're looking for from every single person on our roster, the way that he's guarding and competing, sharing the basketball, playing with pace, being aggressive, attacking, he's not perfect, but he's playing with confidence and putting his energy in the right spots," said Mitch Johnson. "The next thing you know, he has a lot of opportunities and advantageous spots that he finds himself in."

During Monday's loss to the Utah Jazz, Gillespie led all players with 25 points. He outplayed second overall pick Darryn Peterson and is head and shoulders above the other two-way and training camp guys.

Once the regular season starts, Gillespie will be used sparingly, but he shouldn't be shackled by the limits two-way guys face. The Spurs have an open roster spot. Filling it shouldn't be too hard.
