In a no-brainer move, the San Antonio Spurs have signed Victor Wembanyama to the largest deal in franchise history, with incentives to pass the $300 million mark.
It’s all but official: Victor Wembanyama will be with the San Antonio Spurs through the 2031-32 NBA season. After one of the best starts to a career in league history, he and the Spurs will soon agree to a five-year, $251 million contract extension.
And the way the deal will be structured? Should he win MVP, Defensive Player of the Year, or make the All-NBA team next season, that $251 million figure can surpass $300 million over the five years. You’d be hard-pressed to find a fan who doesn’t think he’s worth every penny!
Last season, Wembanyama averaged 25 points, 11.5 rebounds, and 3.1 blocks. He came third in MVP voting and was the youngest–and first unanimous–DPOTY in NBA history. In the postseason, he continued to rise, cementing himself as the best player in the world.
He’s gonna be paid like it, too.
Wembanyama to Break Spurs’ Salary Record
The list of the highest-paid Spurs is rather odd. The biggest contract, up until today, was De’Aaron Fox’s maximum extension signed in 2025. Before that, it was Devin Vassell’s rookie extension, then, finally, in fourth place, Tim Duncan’s seven-year, $122 million deal in 2003.
The Spurs are hoping that Wembanyama can be the franchise centerpiece for the next decade-plus, and this long-term contract will be the first step. Of course, given his stellar play over his first three seasons, there isn’t really a reason to believe that he won’t live up to the hype. At 22 years old, he’s already the best defender in the NBA, one of the most potent and versatile scorers, and clearly one of the top competitors.
The scariest part about his skillset is that he’s just getting started.
Alongside Wembanyama, the Spurs have Fox under contract for three more seasons and are expected to save money to eventually extend Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper. The fact of the matter is that only one of them will be inked to a max deal like Wemby was, although with Castle’s offensive limitations, saving money for Harper might be the right call.
Between George Gervin, David Robinson, Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili, and Duncan, the Spurs have had incredible luck with franchise centerpieces remaining in San Antonio. Duncan, Robinson, Ginobili, and Gervin all still live in the San Antonio area.
When Wembanyama was drafted first overall in 2023, he was clearly overcome with emotion. Of course, most of that was thanks to the fact that he got to live out his NBA dream, but it was clear that he was thrilled over being selected by the Silver and Black.
“I’m a damn Spur!” he cried, while walking off the stage after the draft.
Looks like it’ll stay that way!
