Spurs surge to No. 1 with elite defense and Wembanyama's brilliance, proving championship contention with recent dominance.

The San Antonio Spurs are surging at the perfect time, and the rest of the NBA is taking notice.

In the latest league-wide power rankings from Bleacher Report, San Antonio sits all the way up at No. 1. With roughly a month remaining before the playoffs, the Spurs have positioned themselves as one of the league’s hottest and most complete teams.

For much of the season, San Antonio has steadily built momentum through a combination of elite defense, improved offensive flow, and the continued dominance of franchise centerpiece Victor Wembanyama. The young superstar has been a driving force behind the team’s rise, impacting games on both ends of the floor with his scoring, rim protection, and overall versatility.

The team has won 16 of its last 18 games, and one of its only two losses in that time frame is to the New York Knicks, who are currently in third place in the Eastern Conference.

The other loss was in their last game against the Denver Nuggets, and they only lost by five points despite being without Victor Wembanyama. Stephon Castle racked up enough stats in the game to get another triple-double on the season, showing that he is way more than just Wembanyama's "sidekick."

All of that just goes to show that even without Wemby, the rest of the team can step up and compete with even the best teams in the league.

The roster around Wembanyama has also continued to develop. San Antonio’s supporting cast has played an important role in the team’s success, providing scoring depth, perimeter defense, and improved ball movement. That balance has made the Spurs difficult to defend and even harder to keep off the scoreboard.

Of course, plenty can change in the final weeks of the regular season. The NBA playoff race is notoriously unpredictable, and several teams once thought of as contenders are still jockeying for position. But for now, San Antonio sits atop the league’s power rankings—a sign that their hard work throughout the season is paying off.

If the Spurs continue to play at this level, they could enter the playoffs not just as a top seed, but as one of the most dangerous teams in the league. And with Wembanyama leading the way, the future in San Antonio looks brighter than ever.
