San Antonio Spurs fans will love this Victor Wembanyama prediction.
The San Antonio Spurs have one of the best young players in the NBA in Victor Wembanyama.
The first pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, Wembanyama has career averages of 22.5 points, 10.8 rebounds, 3.8 assists, 1.2 steals and 3.7 blocks. He’s led the league in blocks per game and total blocks both years as a pro, which is very impressive.
There is no limit to how good Wembanyama will be, so much so that Grant Hughes of Bleacher Report thinks the Spurs big man will be the best basketball player in the world in three years.
"Forget the San Antonio Spurs; Victor Wembanyama might be the best player on planet Earth in three years," Hughes wrote.
Wembanyama averaged 24.3 points, 11.0 rebounds, 3.7 assists, 1.1 steals and 3.8 blocks last season for the Spurs in 45 games while shooting 47.6% from the field, 35.2% from beyond the arc and 83.6% from the free-throw line. He made his first All-Star team and recorded 28 double-doubles and one triple-double.
Wembanyama has fully recovered from the blood clot in his right shoulder. According to Marc Stein of The Stein Line, the French big man "looked quite stellar" in a recent basketball game in Los Angeles.
"Wemby, of course, hasn't played in game conditions since February, when his All-Star sophomore season in San Antonio came to an abrupt end due to a blood clot," Stein wrote. "Yet I'm told he played in some recent fullcourt runs at Loyola Marymount in Los Angeles and, just so you know, is said to have looked quite stellar."
A group of ESPN NBA experts, including reporters, editors and analysts, believe Wembanyama will be the best defender in the league next season and win the Defensive Player of the Year Award. Wembanyama already has 430 blocks in only 117 NBA games, so it's easy to see why ESPN is so high on Wemby's defensive ceiling.
The Spurs haven’t made the playoffs since 2019. However, they appear to have an extremely bright future with Wembanyama, De'Aaron Fox, Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper leading the way.
It will be fascinating to see how many games San Antonio wins in 2025-26.
