Spurs' Superstar Dylan Harper 'Takes Pride' In Being a Sidekick
Nov 1, 2026 11:35 PM

The San Antonio Spurs beat the Minnesota Timberwolves on Saturday, and Dylan Harper posted an All-NBA worthy statline, although he understands that his best role is as Victor Wembanyama's sidekick.

On any other team in the NBA, aside from maybe the Dallas Mavericks, Dylan Harper would be the best part of any young core. On the San Antonio Spurs, though, he's second fiddle to Victor Wembanyama, and De'Aaron Fox is the go-to point guard.

Picked second overall in 2025, Harper has all of the markings of a franchise superstar. In San Antonio, though, his primary job is, and always will be, to put Wembanyama in a position to succeed.

On Saturday, as the Spurs beat the Minnesota Timberwolves, Harper posted 25 points, seven rebounds, and six assists. For most players, the 25 points would be what stood out. The Spurs, though, run their offense through their center to great success, and Harper knows that it's his passing that makes him extra appealing.

Dylan Harper Looks to Settle Into Spurs' Role

Harper's 25 points were a career-high, at least in the regular season, although he relishes doing the things that don't shine in the box score.

"I take pride in my passing and just being able to get people to their spots and kind of directing a leader," he said. "I feel like I helped my team out in a lot of ways, and just being able to be that kind of consistent guy out there. No matter who's on the floor, I think was the biggest thing for me."

Right now, Wembanyama, De'Aaron Fox, and Devin Vassell are considered the "leaders" on the floor and in the locker room. Fox has the solid consistency of a seasoned veteran, and while Harper probably has more talent, his wily playstyle makes using him as the go-to option a risk.

As his career goes on and he settles into a creative role, though, expect him to work out the kinks.

Of course, everything is easier for a young guard when you have a 7-5 lob threat who can handle the ball a bit on his own, and Harper knows that the key to taking his game to the next level is to rely on Wembanyama.

"He's just so dominant," gushed Harper. "I feel like he goes out there and, kind of, when he puts his imprint on the game, he's unstoppable. And he did that tonight from the jump to the end of the game. So I mean, hey, I was okay with him taking those shots. Those are all good looks, and my biggest thing with him is just: if you're gonna take the shot, take it, be confident, that's all."

As the Spurs look to extend their winning streak to five games on Monday, expect Harper and the rest to continue to settle into the roles that have made them successful over the last week.
