Could Spurs star Victor Wembanyama win the MVP Award this season?

Spurs superstar Victor Wembanyama is off to a stellar start this season.

The third-year pro is averaging 25.6 points, 12.9 rebounds, 3.1 assists, 1.3 steals and 4.1 blocks per game while shooting 50.8% from the field, 26.1% from beyond the arc and 79.7% from the free-throw line.

Behind Wembanyama, the Spurs are 5-2 and Shaun Powell of NBA.com has Wembanyama fourth in the Kia MVP ladder.

"The last two games — averaging 14 points and 8.5 rebounds, both losses — represented a reset for Wembanyama, whose opening week was a total coming-out party," Powell wrote. "Wembanyama captured the imagination of the hoop world. He got off to a sizzling start, dominating both ends of the floor while showing improvements in all phases and igniting conversation about his potential for greatness (which was steep to begin with).

"The feats were off and running: 40 points against Anthony Davis, nine swats against the Pelicans and falling one rebound shy of six straight games of double-figures on the glass. It is perhaps inevitable that Wembanyama will win at least one MVP, and that’s a very conservative estimate. Of course, if he gets on an MVP roll, it’ll only keep denying Americans for years."

The last Spurs player to win MVP was NBA icon Tim Duncan back in 2003. Duncan won back-to-back MVPs for San Antonio in 2002 and 2003.

As long as he stays healthy, Wembanyama will likely win multiple MVPs like Duncan in his career.

However, unless the Spurs finish with one of the top records in the NBA this season, it's doubtful Wembanyama will win the 2025-26 Michael Jordan Trophy.

To win MVP, you have to put up amazing numbers and lead your team to a strong record. While the Spurs are 5-2, it's still really early in the season and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander's Thunder are 8-1 and SGA is averaging 33.3 points per game.

The Spurs haven't made the playoffs since 2019. Knowing Wembanyama, he's more focused on winning games than taking home MVP honors.
