Everyone wants to be the best player on a title-worthy team. Victor Wembanyama is clearly that for the San Antonio Spurs, but Stephon Castle thinks he can play a key role, as well.
With the San Antonio Spurs' 123-98 win over the Memphis Grizzlies on Wednesday, the team officially clinched home court advantage in the first round of the NBA playoffs.
Under Victor Wembanyama, the Spurs have evolved from one of the most interesting teams in the NBA to one of the best. With Wembanyama leading the way, it makes sense that they rank in the top three in defense, although it goes a lot deeper than just him.
Stephon Castle is one of the best perimeter and on-ball defenders in the NBA, and he knows it. Of course, the lockdown guard is aware that having Wemby as an anchor down low helps immensely, and he isn't afraid to offer credit where it's due.
How Stephon Castle Elevates Spurs' Defense
Having Wembanyama on the floor allows for everyone on the Spurs to take some defensive risks, which can result in added steals and fast-break points. Wembanyama can also stretch out and defend outside the paint, meaning there's usually a defender and a half on any given ball handler.
Castle benefits from the insurance Wembanyama provides, all while giving his teammates the same advantages.
"Obviously, the head of the snake being big makes it a lot easier for us to be aggressive and pick up full court," Castle said. "But I think everybody's individual defense has taken a step since last year, at least. I feel like Vic and I have been the most beneficial out of that."
By having Wembanyama down low, the Spurs can take some added risk. However, by having Castle lock up the best player on the opposing team, everyone else on the roster can slot down and get a pretty easy cover.
The easy flow and general lack of challenges this season has improved the team's mood overall.
"I feel like our energy's been high for, I don't want to say the whole season, but I feel like it has been pretty high the whole season," Castle added. "I mean, as of late, like the last two, three months, I feel like we've been playing our best basketball. I think we all enjoy just being around each other on and off the court, so it makes playing the game a lot easier."
