The San Antonio Spurs jumped out to a quick double-digit lead on Sunday against the New York Knicks, but Mikal Bridges got hot, and Jalen Brunson overcame a slow first quarter, and the Spurs ended up losing 114-89.
Victor Wembanyama led the way for San Antonio, posting an impressive 25 points, 13 rebounds, and four blocks.
That statline looks MVP worthy, although it doesn't tell the full story. Wemby and the Spurs allowed New York to nab 18 offensive rebounds, and Wembanyama gave up seven turnovers and shot only 1-for-7 from 3-point range.
After the game, Wemby didn't shy away and offered a blunt statement on how the Spurs lost.
The Spurs went undefeated in February and had yet to lose on the Rodeo Road Trip. After beating the Detroit Pistons by 11 points in the Motor City, fans could hope for an undefeated road trip, although the Knicks are a tough opponent.
According to Wembanyama, the Spurs made it too easy for them.
"I think they did put some physicality, but not even the most that we've seen, you know," he said after the game. "And for some reason, we were somewhat hesitant, I think in general, a team thing. And for myself, I was especially hesitant on 3s for some reason. I think I was holding the ball a little too much when I shot them, just need a few more reps. That's it. But, yeah, hesitant for some reason, like in that you can see that in our turnovers as well. I had seven and lots of dumb live-ball turnovers, too. We gave them life."
The Knicks got off to a slow start, with Jalen Brunson going scoreless for the first eight minutes as Stephon Castle played lockdown defense. However, Castle needed to catch a breather, and once Mitch Johnson pulled him for a break, the Spurs were never able to bring the same defensive effort, even when Castle was back on the floor.
The Spurs will play one last road game, taking on the Philadelphia 76ers on Tuesday before heading back home for a well-deserved six-game homestand.
