The San Antonio Spurs have one standard roster spot open before the NBA season starts, and Victor Wembanyama wants them to add a French National Team teammate.
Heading into the 2026-27 NBA season, the San Antonio Spurs have one roster spot available. They signed Taelon Peter to a training camp deal and will likely add more players for the preseason showcases, but only one of them will be able to make the standard roster, likely on a minimum contract.
In past summers, the Spurs have been linked to Victor Wembanyama's French teammates, like Guerschon Yabusele. After a standout performance in the 2024 Olympics, he signed with the Philadelphia 76ers, although he struggled to prove himself in the NBA.
The French National Team boasts plenty of NBA talent, and Wembanyama publicly lobbied for the Spurs to sign a veteran player. It remains to be seen if he has any interest in coming back to America.

"Which teammate from the French team would you like to bring to the Spurs?" asked French content creator Reda.
"I would say Evan Fournier," responded Wemby.
Fournier played 12 NBA seasons, averaging 13.6 points. Best-known for his time with the Orlando Magic, he posted 16.2 points across parts of seven seasons. At the Paris Olympics, he and Rudy Gobert were the veteran mentors for a young French Team. At the Games, Fournier posted 10.3 pretty ineffecient opints in the knockout stage, but was a key leader.
Since leaving the NBA in 2024, Fournier has returned to Europe, making the All-EuroLeague Team while playing for Olympiacos. Overseas, he is a solid off-ball scorer who can knock down shots and play with sme physclity on the backcourt.
After being a starter in the NBA for seven seasons, it remains to be seen if he would have any interest in returning in a lesser capacity. Behind De'Aaron Fox, Stephon Castle, Dylan Harper, and even Jordan McLaughlin, the Spurs wouldn't have many minutes for Fournier, although for a chance to finally win an NBA title, it might be worth it for him.
With Wembanyama's vote of confidence, the Spurs should at least explore making it happen. However, considering the success he's found in the EuroLeague, he might be past having interest in coming back to America.
Fournier and Wembanyama are expected to team up for the French once again at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
