Victor Wembanyama is easily the best player on the French National Basketball Team, and as they prepare for the FIBA World Cup, he's been named captain of the team.
For the first time since the 2024 Paris Olympics, Victor Wembanyama will play for Team France. He missed the 2025 EuroBasket, where France was eliminated in the round of 16. Of course, global tournaments have a bigger draw, and the French roster is filled with NBA talent.
Alongside Wembanyama, Les Bleus have three other NBA players: Rudy Gobert, Maxime Raynaud, and Gerald Ayayi, who is on a summer contract with the 76ers. Players like Bilal Coulibaly, Alex Sarr, Zaccharie Risacher, and Nolan Traore are expected to join the roster at a later date.
While Gobert and Evan Fournier are much more experienced than Wembanyama is, he's been named captain of the French team for the summer.

Wemby and France Are Preparing for the World Cup
Before qualifiers open up, Wembanyama and France will take on Nikola Jokic and Serbia in two friendly matches. As the NBA gets more and more international, FIBA and Olympic games are must-watch TV, even for American fans.
After those two friendlies, the French will play Slovenia and Sweden to finish out the qualifications. The actual World Cup will be held next summer in Qatar.
The Americans are going to be heavy favorites in the World Cup, and should use the tournament to prepare for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. After losing the Games on his home court in France, fans should expect Wembanyama to look for revenge at the next Olympics.
"I'm worried for the opponents in a couple of years," he said after settling for silver.
At the moment, Team USA is led by Langston Galloway, but as bigger competitions loom, the Americans will field a more competitive roster. Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper could get the nod to play against France on a global stage, although it's pretty safe to assume that Wemby will be the biggest name in the tournament, beating out other Europeans like Jokic and Luka Doncic.
Since joining the NBA in 2023, Wembanyama has twice had to settle for second: once in the Olympics and once in the Finals. In just three short years, he's come very close to winning some very real hardware, but a lack of experience has held him back.
Expect him to will the French to a top-three finish in the FIBA Cup, with first place very much in play.
