Victor Wembanyama is shouldering most of the blame for the San Antonio Spurs' opening night loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder, but he's fully aware that there's a lot of basketball to be played.

The San Antonio Spurs lost their first game of the season on Wednesday night, falling to the Oklahoma City Thunder 116-104.

The Thunder, to their credit, came into the matchup against San Antonio with pure motivation. The Spurs, meanwhile, talked about being physical before the game and did manage to get some jabs in, but an inefficient offense as a whole and a lackluster scoring effort from Victor Wembanyama sealed their fate.

The Spurs were led by 24 points from Stephon Castle, and all three point guards showed flashes of excellence, especially at turning defense into offense and getting downhill, but they were unable to sustain their effort for the full 48 minutes.

Wembanyama finished with 13 rebounds, six blocks, and 12 points. All but two of those points, though, came at the free-throw line, as he was held to putrid 1-of-13 shooting from the field.

As the game went on and as he searched for his first bucket, it was clear that Wemby was simply desperate to see the ball go in the hoop. He knows fully well that that's not how he's supposed to play.

"I need to go back to playing the basketball I like," Wembanyama summed up after the game. "I don't like it. This is not the sport I like right here, so I got no reason to be hesitant, no reason to not be myself. For me, it's as simple as that. I'm good when I have fun. I mean, at some points, yeah, I missed lots of shots, which I usually don't miss, but after that, I didn't go back to these shots. I wasn't decisive."

The rest of the team struggled with efficiency, too. They shot just 27 percent from 3-point range and 38.7 percent from the floor. Wembanyama did not think the Spurs were playing "their game," but he knows there are 81 games left to fix any mistakes.

"We need to start by playing normal, normal, you know, being our normal selves before we can jump to conclusions," he said.

While the Spurs aren't being rash, they do have a lot of work to do before taking on the Houston Rockets on Friday.
