The San Antonio Spurs may have lost their most recent game, although they enjoyed a record-breaking performance.
The San Antonio Spurs have exceeded preseason expectations this year, led by stellar play from Victor Wembanyama, De'Aaron Fox, and Stephon Castle.
In just this third season, Wembanyama is already a bona fide MVP candidate and the most complete two-way player in the league, and has gotten his fair share of praise during the Spurs' successful season.
Of course, the selfless play of Keldon Johnson, Devin Vassell, and Dylan Harper can't be overlooked. In addition to that trio, Julian Champagnie has found an excellent role with the Spurs and recently set a franchise record.
Julian Champagnie Is the Ultimate Spur
Dating back even before Tim Duncan took over as the face of the franchise, the Spurs have touted a "we over me" mindset, resulting in one of the most cohesive cultures in the NBA.
Superstars like Duncan and Wembanyama have fully bought into that mentality, although, as franchise centerpieces, at the end of the day, it is their team.
The unsung heroes are the most "Spursy" players. Guys like Manu Ginobili, Patty Mills, and Fox have all given up minutes and stats in favor of team success. This season, Julian Champoagnie has continued his breakout, but rather than taking control of the game, he is content to play a smaller, winning role.
In the Spurs' most recent loss, he sank his 192nd 3-pointer on the season, breaking Danny Green's franchise record set in 2015
"I think that's a guy who's taken every opportunity to get better since I've been here," said Wembanyama of Champagnie. "To apply what the coaches say, to be coachable. So it's great to see him reach some achievements like this. I'm really proud."
In his record-setting season, Green averaged 11.7 points, a career high, and the Spurs won 55 games. This season, Champagnie is posting 11.3 points, also a career-best, and the Spurs already have 59 wins under their belt.
On Monday night, the Spurs will take on the Philadelphia 76ers with the hope of winning 60 games for the first time since 2017.
