San Antonio’s young core defies the odds by embracing a fearless mindset, aiming to turn a perceived weakness into a championship edge against the veteran-led Knicks.

For most teams, a lack of experience on the NBA’s biggest stage would be viewed as a weakness. For the San Antonio Spurs, however, Victor Wembanyama believes it could be one of their greatest advantages.

As the Spurs prepare to face the New York Knicks in the 2026 NBA Finals, much of the conversation has centered around the youth of San Antonio’s roster. While the Knicks enter the series with a veteran-heavy group led by Jalen Brunson, Karl-Anthony Towns, Mikal Bridges, and OG Anunoby, the Spurs are powered by a young core that continues to exceed expectations.

Wembanyama recently addressed that difference in experience and offered a unique perspective. Rather than viewing the Spurs’ relative lack of Finals experience as a disadvantage, he suggested it can actually work in the team’s favor.

"The lack of experience is a strength of us," Wembanyama told ESPN's Malika Andrews. "Because we could do impossible stuff because we don't know it's impossible."

That mentality has been a major factor in San Antonio’s remarkable playoff run.

The Spurs entered the postseason with one of the youngest rotations remaining in the field, yet they knocked off the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder in a seven-game Western Conference Finals battle. Throughout the playoffs, players such as Stephon Castle, Dylan Harper, and Devin Vassell have consistently delivered in high-pressure situations alongside Wembanyama.

Experience is often considered one of the most valuable assets during a championship chase, but the Spurs have repeatedly demonstrated that preparation, talent, and confidence can be just as important. Their ability to adapt throughout the playoff series and remain poised in critical moments has become one of the defining traits of this group.

Wembanyama has been at the center of it all. The reigning Defensive Player of the Year has elevated his game throughout the postseason and helped accelerate San Antonio’s timeline from rebuilding franchise to title contender in an instant.

Harrison Barnes, Kelly Olynyk, and Luke Kornet are the three players on the Spurs who have Finals experience, so they will be able to provide that presence off the bench for San Antonio.

Now the Spurs are four wins away from another championship.

Whether experience ultimately favors New York or youthful confidence gives San Antonio the edge remains to be seen. But if Wemby's comments are any indication, the Spurs have no intention of being intimidated by the moment. Instead, they are embracing it.
