Victor Wembanyama drops 41 points and 24 rebounds as the Spurs beat the Thunder 122-115 in double OT to steal Game 1.
Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs just detonated the Western Conference finals.
In a wild Game 1 thriller, Wembanyama delivered a monster 41-point, 24-rebound performance as the Spurs beat the Oklahoma City Thunder 122-115 in double overtime Monday night.
San Antonio didn’t just win. It ripped home-court advantage away from OKC and sent a loud message that this series may already belong to Wemby.
The 22-year-old superstar became the youngest player in NBA playoff history to post at least 40 points and 20 rebounds, passing a mark previously held by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. That’s not hype. That’s history.
And the ending was pure Wembanyama theater.
After Oklahoma City erased a 10-point fourth-quarter deficit and pushed San Antonio to the edge, Wembanyama answered with the kind of closing stretch that makes a playoff legend.
He buried a deep game-tying 3 late in the first overtime, then finished the Thunder off with two violent dunks in the final minute of double OT.
No De’Aaron Fox? No problem.
Dylan Harper gave the Spurs a massive lift with 24 points and a franchise playoff record seven steals. Stephon Castle added 17, while Devin Vassell and Keldon Johnson each scored 13. Julian Champagnie chipped in 11 as San Antonio survived every punch Oklahoma City threw.
The Thunder had chances. Alex Caruso exploded for 31 points off the bench, nearly stealing the night himself.
Jalen Williams returned from a hamstring injury and scored 26. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander had 24 points and 12 assists on MVP night, but his 7-for-23 shooting line told the real story.
San Antonio made him work for everything.
This wasn’t clean. It wasn’t pretty. It was nasty, tense, exhausting playoff basketball — exactly what the Western Conference finals should be.
Oklahoma City’s nine-game playoff winning streak is over. The Spurs have now beaten the Thunder five times in six meetings this season.
And Wembanyama, in his first conference finals game, looked terrifyingly comfortable under the brightest lights.
Game 2 is Wednesday in Oklahoma City, and now the Thunder have a real problem.
Wemby didn’t just take over Game 1.
He may have changed the entire series.
