The Suns are now 1-1 on the season, with much of this due to Booker's efforts. Explore the star's mindset moving into week two of the season here.
Phoenix Suns basketball is back - and the team got in the win column on Saturday night.
The Suns (1-1) took down the Golden State Warriors (0-3) by a score of 131-122 in the 2026-27 home debut.
This was largely thanks to a 43-point effort from Devin Booker, as well as a 41-point loss to the Portland Trail Blazers in Wednesday's season opener.
Booker has taken a more vocal leadership role over the last two seasons, with his growth in this department truly showing in this moment.
The five-time All-Star spoke about the "wake-up call" the Suns got in Wednesday's loss following Saturday's game, while also acknowledging there are areas the team must strive to improve in.
"I mean, we still have some things to clean up... It's definitely a win that we needed... the concerning part is obviously the rebounding"
The moral of the message is simple. While the Suns aren't complaining about winning in front of the home crowd, there are aspects of the game that are still of particular concern.
Before getting into the concerns, there has to be recognition thrown at Booker for this performance. This was absolutely a prime example of a franchise player taking charge in a moment of need. The all-time leading scorer for the franchise didn't shy away from taking a high volume of efficient shots early in the game. He also made a point to balance aggressiveness with leveraging gravity to create opportunities for teammates.
This game was an example of what the Phoenix offense has potential to be when in sync. Despite this, there are concerns that will carry into the next week - particularly when knowing the upcoming opponents.
The two games in the week ahead happen to be the Oklahoma City Thunder and Denver Nuggets. The Thunder thrive in wearing down opponents, averaging 46.5 rebounds per game in the process. This game will test second-year center Khaman Maluach in the highest degree. Denver poses a similar challenge, as they own one of the highest offensive rebounding rates in the NBA. Nikola Jokic - for all the struggles in recent months - will be difficult to stop, and the Suns face an uphill climb from a continuity perspective relative to both opponents.
The two games ahead present an opportunity for the Suns to re-assert themselves as a high-level team. It also presents the opportunity to fall back to earth and lead pundits to believe the opening loss wasn't a fluke.
The onus is on Booker and co. to make the most of the chances that lie ahead.
