A proposed trade would send New Orleans Pelicans forward Zion Williamson to the Phoenix Suns.
One of the Phoenix Suns' top trade candidates this offseason is star guard Jalen Green.
Green is entering the final guaranteed season of his three-year, $105 million contract before having a player option for the 2027-2028 campaign. What makes the 24-year-old such a tradeable piece is his combination of salary, upside, positional overlap with franchise cornerstone Devin Booker, and Phoenix's need for a star frontcourt piece.
To address the latest of those reasons, SI proposed a trade that would swap Green for two-time All-Star and New Orleans Pelicans forward Zion Williamson.
"The Suns exceeded all expectations last season, making the playoffs as the No. 8 seed. Now, they are looking to take another step forward," the article wrote. "Owner Mat Ishbia has been very aggressive since taking over the team, and that is unlikely to change now that he has tasted some success."
This move is major step in the right direction for both parties involved.
For the Suns, this deal provides them a co-star for Booker, which he desperately needs. The five-time All-Star essentially dragged Phoenix to the postseason with some help from Dillon Brooks and Green.
Williamson plays the ideal position and has a strong archetype for a player to star alongside Booker. He is an athletic power forward who does the vast majority of his offensive work in the paint. Many have been critical of his ability to stay on the floor throughout his career, but in the 2025-2026 season he appeared in 62 games. He averaged 21.0 points and 5.7 rebounds on 60.0% shooting.
For New Orleans, the motivation to accept this trade is obvious.
Green has a chance to develop further at just age 24, eventually forming a long-term backcourt duo with rising sophomore Jeremiah Fears. Not to mention, the Williamson experiment has been quite the failure, so a mutual parting of ways feels necessary.
The Suns likely won't win a championship with a star duo of Booker and Williamson, but if contention is the goal, this trade brings them one step closer.
