The Phoenix Suns could send out Jalen Green in a blockbuster trade for Spurs' De'Aaron Fox.
The Phoenix Suns saw what level of success can come when pairing Devin Booker alongside another star guard.
With Chris Paul as his backcourt partner in 2021, the Suns managed to reach the NBA Finals before falling short to Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks. If the front office's goal remains to contend in the loaded Western Conference, acquiring a star guard isn't out of the question.
SBNation linked the Suns to a trade for San Antonio Spurs All-Star guard De'Aaron Fox, who is coming off a rough playoffs. The full proposed trade details are as follows:
Suns receive: De'Aaron Fox, 2 first-round picks via DET, 3 first-round picks via ATL, BOS, and DAL from SAS
Spurs receive: Duncan Robinson, Caris LeVert
Pistons receive: Jalen Green
If the Suns receive an offer of five first-round picks for Green, they should accept it without hesitation. So, for the sake of this scenario being more realistic, let's assume much less draft capital is involved.
Trading Green is a logical move for Phoenix given his redundancy with Booker, as both are primarily shooting guards who thrive with the ball in their hands. The question then becomes, is Fox the ideal backcourt partner for the Suns' franchise cornerstone?
As previously mentioned, Fox had a significant drop-off in production in this year's postseason, averaging just 15.6 points on 41.4% shooting and 29.4% shooting from three-point range. However, judging a player's talent off a single NBA Finals run is a bit aggressive.
When analyzing Fox from a wider lens, it becomes much easier to see why he could mesh well with Booker and the Suns as a whole. He is an athletic playmaker who plays gritty defense and can be productive without having the ball the majority of the time.
There is a major drawback, which is his contract. He begins a four-year, $221 million extension next season, which runs through the 2029-2030 season. This means if the Fox-Booker pairing does not pan out as expected, the Suns could be trapped with that lucrative deal on their books until it expires.
The reality is Phoenix is starved for talent, and despite Fox's latest playoff run, he would add another dimension of skill to the Suns' roster.
