New-look lineups and a dominant first half weren't enough to withstand Detroit's physical comeback, as a last-second rookie layup handed Phoenix a narrow exhibition defeat.

The Phoenix Suns (0-1) opened up 2026-27 preseason play with a last second 109-107 loss against the Detroit Pistons.

This contest was always one that would be a challenge for the Suns, as Detroit is coming off a 62-win campaign built around a culture of relentless physicality. It was also the first occurrence of the new acquisitions working their way into the Phoenix rotation.

Follow a recap of the game below.

First Half

Phoenix's offense looked the part of a well-oiled machine over the first several minutes of action.

Featured stories

The starting unit of Devin Booker-Jalen Green-Miles Bridges-Dillon Brooks-Oso Ighodaro didn't encounter many issues at all. Bridges in particular found ways to shine early, scoring the first seven points of the game for Phoenix.

Phoenix went into the second frame of action with a 35-21 lead.

The offense didn't skip much of a beat over the next 12 minutes. The trio of Booker/Green/Brooks went 6-9 from the field, while Phoenix put 33 points on the board.

Unfortunately, the defense showed some cracks before halftime, allowing the Pistons to score 29 in the frame.

Second Half

The third quarter of action yielded a much more uneven result for the Suns. By this point, the bench unit was what head coach Jordan Ott was relying on.

Defensive lapses, sloppy ball control, and a general lack of cohesion led to Detroit posting a dominant 34-16 third quarter of action.

The fourth quarter brought much of the same, as Detroit took a 92-89 lead that led to an Ott timeout with 8:51 remaining.

Detroit seemingly pulled away in the minutes ahead, but timely shots from Phoenix tied the game up at 107 in the final seconds.

Detroit rookie Ebuka Okorie came through in the most crucial point of the game, driving and connecting on a challenging layup to gift Detroit the victory.

While this loss wasn't the ideal outcome for the Suns, there were still many positives to take out of the contest. The next two weeks will be key for Ott to figure out what rotations are optimal for the regular season opener, as well as what opening rotations will look like.

What's Next

The Suns stay on the road for game number two of preseason play, taking on the Chicago Bulls on Wednesday. The home debut is coming on Saturday, when Phoenix welcomes the San Antonio Spurs to the Mortgage Matchup Center on Saturday night.
