The Phoenix Suns overcame a major deficit against Sacramento Kings, earn their first victory of the new NBA season.

The Phoenix Suns were off to a slow start in their season opener against the Sacramento Kings. Ending the first half down 71-54, and, at one point, a 20-point deficit. The Suns came out of the halftime ready to go, making corrections and eventually relying on 34 points from the bench to overcome the deficit.

Brand new coach Jordan Ott, who was making his debut, went with a smaller lineup to start the game, keeping center Mark Williams on the bench. However, Williams did have 11 rebounds and six points in just 24 minutes of being on the court.

Also making his Suns debut was Dillon Brooks, who ended the game with 22 points and four rebounds in 34 minutes of play.

The two are already showing to be positives addition to this Phoenix team.

The leader of the team, Devin Booker, now in his 11th NBA season, led the team in scoring with 31 points. Booker also had three assists and five rebounds in 36 minutes of court time.

Kings guard Zach Lavine was their leading scorer. In 35 minutes, Lavine went 13-24 from the floor on field goals with 30 points but shooting just 2-10 from beyond the arc, a rare poor performance for him from long range.

What we are seeing as the NBA is climbing out of the "super team" era is coaches like Coach Ott focusing more on the development of players and depth on the bench. As we saw last year with the Indiana Pacers and Coach Rick Carlisle, the future and depth are now keys for success.

Carlisle and the Pacers had the depth and took the time on players that most teams would not have, which brought them one win away from winning the NBA Finals. This is the same approach Ott is bringing to the new looking Phoenix Suns.

If you didn't watch this game and only looked at the box score, you would think the Sacramento Kings dominated this game.

The Kings had a better shooting percentage, 50-percent to the Suns' 47-percent, less turnovers, more assists and more blocks. Where Phoenix was able to capitalize and ultimately win the game was on the rebounds or "second chance points." The Suns had a total of 51 rebounds and dominated the paint with a total of 64 points from the paint.

The Suns now travel to Los Angeles to face the Clippers on Friday night. Phoenix will look to clean up the turnovers and have a better shooting percentage from the field.

They will be facing former teammate, who was involved in the Kevin Durant trade, Bradley Beal. He is along side another former Suns player and veteran, Chris Paul.
