Phoenix's 2026-27 season opener didn't go the way anyone would have hoped for.

The 2026-27 season opener is leaving much to be desired for the Phoenix Suns.

The Suns (0-1) got off to one of the worst starts that any team could conceive on Wednesday night in a 124-83 loss to the 1-0 Portland Trail Blazers.

Phoenix went into the night facing an uphill climb to begin with, but guard Luke Kennard missing the game compounded issues that led to a rough night.

First Half

Portland scored the first 21 points of the game, establishing dominance early on multiple fronts, including in shotmaking and physicality.

The first frame didn't get much better for the Suns, as the Blazers led 43-12 after one quarter, with Damian Lillard and Ja Morant leading the way.

There was a point in the second quarter when Phoenix was seemingly picking up steam, with the team cutting the Portland lead to 45-22, but the Blazers countered with a 17-2 run in following of this.

Another major moment took place late in the first half, as center Oso Ighodaro exited the game with 4.5 seconds remaining while favoring his hip. The Suns would eventually rule the third-year standout out for the rest of the game.

Phoenix went into halftime trailing by a score of 72-39.

Second Half

There were a small number of silver linings to take out of the second half of action - unfortunately none of these came on the defensive side of the ball.

One of the major positives out of the third quarter of action was the emergence of Devin Booker as a scoring threat. The 12th-year star finished the period with six made field goals, upping his game total to 21 points.

Despite this, Portland outscored Phoenix 35-27 over the 12-minute period. The final frame lent the opportunity for Koa Peat to make his NBA regular season debut and score his first points as a pro.

Outside of this, there was little to hang their hats on in the final frame.

Key Individual Performers

What's Next

The Suns are opening up the 41-game home slate this season on Saturday night against the Golden State Warriors. A great deal of questions will come the way of head coach Jordan Ott in the days ahead, and a response to the disastrous opener is crucial.
