The Phoenix Suns intend to keep former Charlotte Hornets forward Miles Bridges around longer than just one season.
The Phoenix Suns' active offseason continued on Sunday, as the front office traded for former Charlotte Hornets star forward Miles Bridges.
A key piece of the deal for Bridges is that the 28-year-old is entering the final season of a three-year, $75 million contract. This means if the Suns are unable to come to terms on an extension with him, they gave up two key role players in Grayson Allen and Royce O'Neale along with an unprotected first-round pick for a one-year rental of Bridges.
Luckily, Suns insider John Gambadoro shared a positive update on Phoenix's plan.
"The plan is that Bridges will not just be here for one year - at some point not sure when they would like to extend him," Gambadoro posted to X.
What exactly an extension for Bridges will look like is hard to say, as it could depend on how he performs to start next season.
NBA fans are split on this trade for the Suns. Some argue the valid point that Bridges does not move the needle for Phoenix to become a true contender in the loaded Western Conference while others praise the front office for its willingness to make win-now moves.
Ultimately, Bridges does improve the Suns' roster. The long-time Hornets forward averaged 17.1 points, 5.8 assists, and 3.2 rebounds on 46.0% shooting and 33.3% shooting from three-point range in 77 games in the 2025-2026 season.
He will slot into the starting power forward position alongside guards Devin Booker and Jalen Green, forward Dillon Brooks, and center Mark Williams.
The other ideal part about the trade for Bridges is it frees up money and a roster spot to target a player in free agency. Gambadoro, in the same post, shared what the Suns intend to do with that open slot.
"To replace Grayson Allen the Suns are looking at 7 to 8 free agent shooting guards. So, another move coming here in free agency soon," Gambadoro wrote.
The Suns clearly have a plan in mind even if the public isn't fully on board.
