Phoenix looks to lure the NBA’s all-time leading scorer with a strategic blend of geographic convenience and a playmaking role designed to maximize Devin Booker’s scoring potential.
The Phoenix Suns have been off to a breezy start to NBA free agency, as the organization has already re-signed three players, acquired Koa Peat in the first round of the draft, and have now brought in Luke Kennard on a two-year deal.
Are the stars aligning for another seismic move in the near future?
The possibilities are intriguing, as 23-year veteran LeBron James is officially on the open market again for the first time since the 2018 offseason - that much was made clear on Tuesday.
While the odds would be stacked against the Suns in a potential pursuit, they would have a compelling pitch to make to the four-time league MVP.
Andy Bailey of Bleacher Report revealed a pitch that the Suns can use that is quite straightforward, yet remains quite fascinating: the thought of staying within close proximity to Los Angeles and to take hold of a defined role in year 24.
"If warm weather and proximity to Los Angeles is a real considerations for LeBron, the Phoenix Suns would be attractive. And like others detailed above, there's a pretty obvious spot in the lineup for him," Bailey wrote.
"Phoenix just acquired Miles Bridges, but he's not the playmaker LeBron is. Adding him to the forward corps would open up loads of scoring opportunities for Bridges and Devin Booker," Bailey concluded.
Whether the Suns would become a contender with James or not is up for debate, but there's little doubt around the NBA's all-time leading scorer getting the most out of his teammates - regardless of where his next destination lies. Mark Williams, Collin Gillespie, Bridges, and Kennard would be a few of many players on the Phoenix roster that would benefit from the presence of an elite playmaker, while Booker will be able to slide back into his natural role - which should only maximize what he is able to do in year 12 of his career.
Ultimately, a union between James and the Suns feels overwhelmingly unlikely due to many factors (Dillon Brooks, contending status, more), but the stage is set for Phoenix to make a pursuit. The location pitch, an ability to play alongside Booker, and being in a low-pressure situation are three areas that could gift Phoenix momentum in the chase for who is arguably the greatest player in league history.
As it stands, the Suns roster is set to be at 15 members once the trade to acquire Bridges goes through.
