From towering LED displays to polarizing roster gambles, Mat Ishbia is aggressively reshaping the fan experience and organizational culture to cement a bold, high-stakes future in Phoenix.
The Phoenix Suns have been under strong stewardship under governor Mat Ishbia - at least it appears that way.
Ishbia has been in control of the organization since February of 2023 and has done nothing but make visionary moves since, even if some errors have come about in the process.
The 46-year old has encountered recent business losses, but this isn't stopping him from continuing to go all-in on the Suns. Ishbia is once again demonstrating a committed approach by announcing a 41-foot tall LED display being added to the exterior of Mortgage Matchup Center prior to the start of the season.
This move is in addition to Ishbia directing a $2 value menu offering in-arena, as well as adding premium dining and entertainment experiences within the grounds of Mortgage Matchup Center.
Fan experience is just one part of the story. Ishbia is certainly putting more thought into maximizing the fan experience from a value and comfort perspective, but it also points to a tireless commitment to building a lasting winner.
The Michigan State alum has never been shy to doubling down on trusting people he trusts, including head coach Jordan Ott and general manager Brian Gregory. Ishbia is both fully immersing the experience of being a Suns fan with bold ideas, while also being impartial to those that connect with him the most, for better or worse.
This mindset led to acquiring former Michigan State forward Miles Bridges, a move that is polarizing within the Phoenix fanbase to this day. In theory the Suns' roster should be improved, but at what cost? The Suns are clearly taking their chances in this scenario, which has backfired in the past. However, there is a different culture in place under the watch of Ott that is raising the chances for success.
Perhaps the most vital takeaway is that Ishbia is still refusing to shy away from spending on the organization. In a world where Tom Dundon (Portlnd Trail Blazers) is attempting to avoid paying for arena renovations, Ishbia is embracing keeping the Suns ahead of the rest of the pack. This reflects in the Suns remaining firmly in the first apron despite not contending for a title at this moment.
Ishbia is unafraid to be bold when necessary. He is also fully invested in bringing a first-ever title to the NBA under the backdrop of a forward-thinking organization.
