Phoenix brings back a key piece of the franchise's new culture by re-upping Jordan Goodwin - read more on our grading of the signing below.
It has been an eventful weekend for the Phoenix Suns organization - to say the least.
The Suns have already accomplished much of what they set out to do this offseason before free agency officially opens on June 30, as the team re-signed Collin Gillespie on Saturday afternoon before re-upping Jordan Goodwin on a three-year, $19 million deal on Sunday morning.
This caps off an incredible journey for Goodwin, who previously spent time with Phoenix during the 2023-24 season before being released. The Saint Louis alum then caught back onto the roster in training camp last summer - ultimately earning the final spot on the 15-man squad.
Goodwin's deal ensures that a key rotation piece will remain in Phoenix for the foreseeable future, but there is much more than meets the eye with this contract.
Goodwin's Deal is Strong Value
The three-year contract is slated to increase in value on a yearly basis and Goodwin will receive a player option for year three - which allows him to either take the security or re-enter the open market in the hopes of obtaining a larger contract. This contract is the type of flexibility that GM Brian Gregory has desired to seek out over the last year, while head coach Jordan Ott will continue to preside over the development of a player that has shown marked growth over the last two seasons.
While Goodwin profiles as a rather average offensive player in many categories, he is an exceptional offensive rebounder for his size, while also being unafraid to let three-point attempts fly, which was much needed for an offense that was catalyzed by being top-10 in three-point percentage and volume.
Defense is where the value he provides becomes even clearer, as the 6'3" guard is one of the most versatile players on that side of the ball in the entire NBA. Crafted NBA ranks Goodwin in the 89th percentile for overall versatility, while also being in the 82nd percentile of contesting shot attempts that were made with him in the vicinity. Perhaps the most impressive metric is the Illinois native being in the 95th percentile when it comes to deflecting passes. Goodwin and Gillespie will continue to be two of the most disruptive guards in the NBA in that lane - even if both are considered undersized.
In conclusion, Goodwin has firmly entrenched himself in the Suns' culture, has provided positive value across numerous mediums, and was given a contract that benefits both sides.
