Josh Giddey has emerged as a potential trade target for the Suns this offseason, but he shouldn't be a top priority to pursue.
The Phoenix Suns' 2026 offseason is off to a strong start, as the franchise has managed to re-sign both Collin Gillespie and Jordan Goodwin over the weekend. Retaining the two guards was always a top priority for the organization, as the pair managed to aid in the team having a +9 net rating when they saw the court together.
Now, the onus is on GM Brian Gregory to explore avenues to re-signing Mark Williams prior to the opening of free agency on June 30, while also scouring the market for potential upgrades through the backdrops of this week's NBA draft.
One potential upgrade rests in Chicago Bulls PG/SG Josh Giddey, who has been linked to the Suns by HoopsHype's insider Michael Scotto. The soon-to-be sixth-year guard has emerged as a legitimate star in the two seasons he's played since departing the OKC Thunder two years ago.
While Giddey has improved as a three-point shooter, all-around defender, and playmaker over the years, it may be in Phoenix's best interests to avoid making a move for him.
The Australian prodigy is set to enter year two of a four-year, $100 million contract for the rebuilding Bulls - the structure of the deal would theoretically open the door for the Suns to trade Jalen Green as a centerpiece, but Giddey's ceiling and Chicago's potential insistence for Phoenix to include a draft pick should be dealbreakers.
Perhaps the most blatant reason to pass up a trade is built around the belief that a trade for Giddey would severely limit what Gillespie and Goodwin are able to do role-wise on a consistent basis.
The 23-year old would be a strong enough fit within the confines of Jordan Ott's offense, but his long-term viability as a piece for the franchise would always be in question - it's very likely to be wisest to wait everything out and gauge other options out next summer.
The Suns are still months away from reaching the 2026-27 regular season, but the roster construction process that's in place over the next several weeks will tide the fanbase over in the meantime.
