Dillon Brooks looks to shed his volatile reputation by curbing technical fouls, prioritizing disciplined intensity over costly suspensions to fuel Phoenix's deep championship aspirations.

Dillon Brooks has already established himself as both a vital piece of the Phoenix Suns' core moving into the future and a beloved part of the city in just one full calendar year.

The Oregon alum was originally believed to be headed to Phoenix in a trade involving former Sun Trevor Ariza all the way back in 2018, but a miscommunication prevented that from taking shape at the time. Now, Brooks is entering his second season in Phoenix after enjoying a career year that included an average of over 20 PPG in across 56 appearances for the playoff-bound Suns.

The Canadian native is now seeking to reinvent himself ahead of his 10th season in the NBA - with his "villain goal" for the next season being a topic that was discussed in a recent vlog that showcased his offseason routine in Toronto.

"My villain goal would probably be not to get 17 technical fouls in a season. We'll see if I can save them for the end. At least half of them are earned. Some of them are by the same refs, and some of them I don't need to get. Costs me some wins. So, you know, it's the energy that we live by, so some of them are called for."

Brooks has become notorious for racking up technical fouls - being tabbed for 105 across his first nine seasons, including a career-high 20 in 2025-26. A player is due to serve an automatic one-game suspension once they accumulate 16 during a season, which is exactly what is being referred to above.

While the undying physicality and competitive spirit get commended by fans to an extent, there is a point in which it dangerously borders with negatively impacting the team. The 45-win Suns were hampered by Brooks missing over a month with a broken hand over the second half of the 25-26 campaign - but this isn't the point.

Brooks could experience a season of perfect health in 2026-27 and eventually impact Phoenix's season if he piles up too many technical fouls - it absolutely has to be a consideration, and the fact that self-reflection is being made should come off as a positive development for Suns fans.

In the meantime, Brooks is currently suiting up for Canada's national team as they prepare to make a run towards qualifying for the 2027 FIBA World Cup. Brooks is serving as a co-captain for the team as well, which is yet another positive sign for the Suns moving forward.
