Shorthanded Clippers pose unique challenges. Thunder must dominate the paint, play disciplined defense, and avoid complacency to secure victory.

The Thunder return to action with a favorable matchup on paper, hosting a Clippers team that will be without two massive pieces in Ivica Zubac and James Harden. Missing both a primary interior presence and their offensive organizer fundamentally changes how the Clippers operate on both ends of the floor.

Still, NBA games are rarely as simple as who’s available and who isn’t. For the Thunder to take care of business, they’ll need to stay disciplined and attack the specific weaknesses this shorthanded Clippers group presents.

Here are the three keys to the game.

1. Dominate the Paint and the Glass

Without Zubac, the Clippers lose their best rim protector, rebounder, and screen setter. That opens the door for the Thunder to control the interior, both scoring wise and on the glass.

Oklahoma City should look to establish early paint touches, whether through drives from Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Jalen Williams or by involving their bigs as roll men and offensive rebounders.

This is also an opportunity for the Thunder to punish the Clippers with second chance points. Too often this season, Oklahoma City has relied on finesse and shot making rather than physicality, which has worked. Against a Zubac-less frontcourt, that can’t be the case.

Winning the rebounding battle decisively not only creates extra possessions but also takes the crowd and energy out of a Clippers team already short handed.

If the Thunder can build a paint advantage early, it will open up kick out threes and force the Clippers to collapse defensively something they’re far less equipped to do without their anchor in the middle.

2. Stay Locked In Defensively Without Overhelping

James Harden’s absence removes the Clippers’ primary playmaker, but that doesn’t mean their offense disappears. In fact, it can become more unpredictable. Without Harden orchestrating, the Clippers will rely more on isolation scoring, off ball movement, and quick decision making from role players.

The Thunder’s defensive key will be discipline. This isn’t a night to gamble excessively or overhelp out of habit. Overhelping can lead to open corner threes and rhythm shots for players who otherwise struggle to create on their own.

Oklahoma City has thrived this season by forcing turnovers while still maintaining structure. That balance will be critical here. Make the Clippers beat you with tough, contested shots rather than gifting them open looks due to unnecessary rotations.

3. Avoid Playing Down to the Opponent

This is the most important key. The Thunder have been the best team in the league because they approach games with maturity and focus. Matchups like this can test that mindset. Missing Zubac and Harden, the Clippers are vulnerable, but also dangerous if given confidence.

The Thunder must set the tone early with energy, pace, and defensive pressure. A strong first quarter can quickly turn this into a game where depth and talent take over. A slow start, however, invites belief from a Clippers team with nothing to lose.

Take care of the ball, push in transition, and play with urgency. If the Thunder do that, this matchup should swing firmly in their favor.
