Gilgeous-Alexander's 47-point offensive assault forced overtime, silencing critics and propelling the shorthanded Thunder to a hard-fought victory.
The Oklahoma City Thunder was shorthanded against the Detroit Pistons on Monday night, playing without key contributors Jalen Williams and Isaiah Hartenstein. Still, Detroit was even more depleted, with several major rotation pieces sidelined entering the matchup and being without its top five scorers. Even so, the Thunder, despite being a heavy favorite at home, needed overtime to escape with a 114-110 win and improve to 60-16 on the season.
The end of regulation was the most controversial part of the night. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander carried Oklahoma City in the fourth quarter, helping erase a late Pistons edge and putting the Thunder in position to steal the game before overtime. What initially looked like a potential go-ahead Gilgeous-Alexander triple in the closing seconds was wiped out by an offensive foul call, sending the game to overtime instead.
From there, Gilgeous-Alexander remained in full control. He orchestrated the offense well enough in overtime to push the Thunder to the four-point victory, finishing with 47 points in one of his biggest scoring nights of the season. He lived at the foul line throughout the game, and while 25 free throw attempts jumps off the page, it also reflected how relentlessly he attacked a Detroit defense that struggled to stay in front of him.
Outside of Gilgeous-Alexander, Oklahoma City did not get much scoring punch from its usual standards, but enough complementary pieces made timely plays. Ajay Mitchell added 14 points, Chet Holmgren scored 13 and Aaron Wiggins chipped in 10. The Thunder’s supporting cast did not dominate offensively, but it came through in key moments and helped stabilize the game around Shai’s takeover.
It was not the prettiest win Oklahoma City has had this season, especially given how undermanned Detroit was, but a win is a win this late in the year. The Thunder is now 60-16 and still holding off San Antonio in the race for the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference. With six games remaining, every result still carries major weight.
Next up for Oklahoma City is a home matchup against the Los Angeles Lakers on Thursday at Paycom Center, another opportunity for the Thunder to earn a marquee win and another big stage for Gilgeous-Alexander as the postseason draws closer.
