Thunder's blistering offense ignites a dominant performance, overwhelming the Lakers with sharp shooting and relentless pressure for a decisive victory.
The Oklahoma City Thunder went into Thursday night’s matchup against the Los Angeles Lakers with a lot to prove. It was an MVP head-to-head matchup between Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Luka Doncic, and it was also a Western Conference test against the No. 3 seed, a team that could very well match up with the Thunder in the playoffs. Furthermore, the No. 1 seed in the West is still up for grabs, and Oklahoma City needs every win it can get down the stretch to maintain that top spot.
And that’s exactly what the Thunder did.
This team took care of business from the beginning, came out extremely strong, fired from behind the arc, and ultimately built a 44-21 lead by the end of the first quarter and never looked back. The Thunder went on to win by a final score of 139-96, and Gilgeous-Alexander finished with 28 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists.
Now, unfortunately, Doncic did go down with an injury. He appeared to re-aggravate his left hamstring, but at that point it was already well into blowout territory at 90-58 midway through the third quarter, so the game was effectively over.
The Thunder took 23 more shots than the Lakers, shot more than 10 percentage points better from the field, shot more than 20 percentage points better from behind the arc, and knocked down nearly triple the amount of threes Los Angeles made. That was fueled by forcing a ton of turnovers and turning those mistakes into 24 points. The Thunder also had 18 second-chance points behind 13 offensive rebounds, and that was the story.
Oklahoma City was hot from the floor and got contributions from basically everybody on the roster. When a team is shooting this well collectively and the shot volume is also swinging heavily in its favor, that is a huge recipe for success.
So, this was a huge win for Oklahoma City, who is now 61-16 on the season. From here, the Thunder will return to action Sunday evening at Paycom Center against the Utah Jazz.
