As roster shifts reshape Oklahoma City, the third-year guard ignores outside noise to anchor a new-look rotation poised for a deep championship run in the Western Conference.
Ajay Mitchell knows the expectations surrounding the Oklahoma City Thunder are high heading into the 2026-27 season. After another successful year and a trip to the Western Conference Finals, there is plenty of excitement about what this team can accomplish.
There is also growing interest in what Mitchell can bring to the table.
Entering his third season with the Thunder, Mitchell has an opportunity to build on the progress he made last year. With changes to the roster and new opportunities available, his role could continue to grow. Still, the outside expectations haven’t changed how he approaches the game.
For Mitchell, it comes down to finding ways to help Oklahoma City win.
“I mean, yeah, it’s exciting. Doesn’t really change the way I look at things. My focus has always been how can I help this team win, and this year is the same thing,” Mitchell said at Thunder Media Day.
That mindset has helped Mitchell establish himself in Oklahoma City. Rather than getting caught up in what people expect from him individually, he is focused on doing whatever the team needs.
“So try to approach it the same way. Try to find ways to help make this team better. Just really excited to be here and get started again,” Mitchell said.
The Thunder will have some new faces to work into the rotation this season, and that means the team will have to figure out what works best with its current group. Oklahoma City lost several players from last season’s roster, including Lu Dort, Aaron Wiggins and Isaiah Joe, while bringing in players such as Aday Mara, Bennett Stirtz, Jared McCain and Thomas Sorber.
It is a different-looking team, and general manager Sam Presti has made it clear that the Thunder cannot simply try to recreate what they did in previous seasons. The group will have to adjust, find its identity and figure out how to make the most of its new pieces.
Mitchell is looking forward to seeing how everything comes together.
“I mean, a lot of different things. I think we have a great team, a complete team, and just excited to see how we start and how the season goes,” Mitchell said.
While there will be an adjustment period, Oklahoma City still has the talent and experience to compete with the best teams in the league. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Chet Holmgren and Jalen Williams remain at the center of the team’s plans, while players like Mitchell will have an important role in helping the group reach its potential.
The Thunder have high expectations, but Mitchell believes the team’s competitive nature will help it handle the pressure.
“But obviously we have high expectations, and we have a lot of competitors, which is really exciting,” Mitchell said.
For Mitchell, there is no need to overcomplicate things. The roster may look different, and expectations may be higher, but his approach hasn’t changed.
He wants to help the Thunder win, find ways to make his teammates better and see how far this group can go.
