The Thunder GM discusses the organization's immense trust in the young guard, framing roster moves as a high-stakes gesture of faith despite remaining tight-lipped on extension specifics.
Sam Presti held his annual preseason press conference with Oklahoma City media members on Thursday morning.
The OKC Thunder General Manager, as always, covered a wide array of topics over his comparatively brief one and a half hour question and answer session. Presti responded to questions pertaining to everything from finances to roster spots to aprons to Russell Westbrook's retirement news. But there was one subject that has been weighing on the minds of Thunder fans more than most others over the summer.
Is Cason Wallace going to sign a contract extension?
Joe Mussatto of The Oklahoman put it this way: "...as far as the savings generated from the summer going toward future teams, I know you're not going to give us specifics about Cason's extension, but would that fall under that, being able to extend a young player like Cason?"
Of course, if you've been following the Thunder for any amount of time, then you know that Presti would not (for good reason) give any details on contract negotiations.
"Sure. I don't want to speak to, like I said, definitively about those things," Presti said. "I would just say Cason is someone we think very highly of and has done a great job for us."
The 2025 NBA Executive of the Year did was forthcoming, however, on how highly the organization thinks of Wallace. And that the team has big plans for him.
"I think the greatest sign of respect we could have shown Cason is moving Lu in that trade," Presti continued. "We potentially could have looked at a series of other options, but it's a bit of a gesture to him to say, We think you can have a great role on this team. We believe in you as a player. And we're hopeful that all that can work out."
It's true. Lu Dort was a culture builder and a core starting member of this OKC team that bridged the rebuild to a championship squad. Everyone in the Thunder organization and fanbase will forever hold Dort in high regard. And now Wallace is being handed Dort's role on a team favored to win more games than any other in the league. The gesture shows a lot of trust in the 22 year old's ability as a lockdown defender and as a 3 point shooter.
Our apologies, though, if you clicked on this story hoping for a definitive answer to the Cason Wallace contract question. If it happens, none of us will know until we receive that Shams Charania notification.
"But I never like talking specifics about that type of stuff," Presti concluded in regards to the Wallace extension question. "I just don't think it's appropriate."
