The rookie guard’s NBA debut is on hold following a preseason injury against Indiana, forcing the Thunder to adjust their rotation ahead of a championship-caliber campaign.

The Oklahoma City Thunder have suffered an unfortunate setback just days before the start of the regular season. Rookie guard Otega Oweh will miss the entire 2026-27 season after suffering a ruptured right Achilles tendon during Tuesday night’s preseason game against the Indiana Pacers.

The Thunder announced Wednesday that Oweh underwent a successful procedure to address the injury. Dr. Martin O’Malley performed the procedure at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York, with members of Oklahoma City’s medical staff present.

Oweh suffered the injury during the Thunder’s preseason matchup with Indiana on Oct. 13. The team confirmed that he will miss the remainder of the season, leaving the young guard facing a long recovery before he can return to the court.

It’s a tough break for Oweh, especially with the regular season right around the corner. Preseason is an important time for young players to show what they can do, get comfortable at the NBA level and make a case for a bigger role. Oweh will now have to put those plans on hold as he turns his attention to rehabilitation.

For a team that has made player development such an important part of its success, losing a young player to a season-ending injury is never easy. The Thunder have consistently given their younger players opportunities to grow, learn the system and prove they can contribute. Oweh was hoping to take advantage of that opportunity as he began his NBA journey.

Instead, his rookie season will be spent recovering from an injury that can be difficult for any athlete to overcome.

The timing is especially frustrating because Oweh was on the verge of beginning his first regular season in the league. Rather than focusing on adjusting to the speed and physicality of NBA basketball, he will have to work through the recovery process and prepare for the challenges that come with returning from an Achilles injury.

Oklahoma City has not provided a more specific timetable for Oweh’s recovery beyond confirming that he will miss the entire 2026-27 season. The organization said additional updates will be provided as appropriate.

For the Thunder, Oweh’s absence means one fewer young guard available as the team continues preparing for the regular season. Oklahoma City has made several changes to its roster during the offseason, creating opportunities for players to establish themselves and earn minutes. With Oweh sidelined, other players will have a chance to compete for those opportunities.

Still, the focus for Oweh will be on getting healthy rather than rushing back to the court. Achilles injuries require patience, and the most important thing for the young guard is to take the necessary steps toward a full recovery.

The Thunder are coming off another successful season and have championship expectations entering 2026-27. Unfortunately, injuries are part of the game, and Oweh’s setback is a reminder of how quickly things can change.

For now, Oweh will begin the long road back, while Oklahoma City moves forward without him for the season. It’s a disappointing development for a young player looking to make his mark, but his priority will be putting in the work necessary to return to the court when the time is right.
