Oklahoma City Thunder fans have one more event to add to their All Star Weekend watch list.
The NBA announced that Chet Holmgren will participate in the Shooting Stars competition on Valentine's Day. This will be Holmgren's second All-Star event along with his selection in the All-Star Game on Sunday night.
The Shooting Stars competition makes a return to the All-Star festivities after an 11 year hiatus. The contest originated in 2004 and was last played in 2015. The event is comprised of four teams consisting of two current NBA players and one retired NBA legend. Holmgren is on "Team All-Star" alongside teammates Scottie Barnes of the Toronto Raptors and three time All-Star and one time NBA champion Richard Hamilton formerly of the Detroit Pistons.
The Shooting Stars competition will include two rounds. Every one of the four teams will take part in the first round. The top two scoring teams will advance to the second and final round while the other two teams will be eliminated. Each team will be allotted 1 minute and 10 seconds to attempt to score as many points as possible by making shots at seven different spots marked on the court.
OKC was initially going to be well represented at All-Star Weekend. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was selected as a starter for the All-Star Game for the third straight season. While he will miss the game due to his abdominal strain, the reigning MVP will likely still be in attendance and much discussed during the broadcast. Ajay Mitchell was selected as a sophomore Rising Star. The Sixth Man of the Year candidate's status for the game is still unknown as he too is dealing with an abdominal strain.
So the Thunder went from three players participating in various events throughout the weekend to possibly only Holmgren being OKC's lone representative. Which may give Oklahoma City fans a little extra motivation to mark their calendars for the Shooting Stars competition.
The Rising Stars game will take place on February 13 at 8pm central time.
The Shooting Stars competition will take place on February 14 at 4pm central time.
The All-Star Game tournament will begin on February 15 at 4pm central time.
