After a promising Summer League debut, a walking boot on Otega Oweh’s left ankle stalls the gritty rookie's push for a spot on the Thunder’s loaded roster.

At one point, it seemed very likely that the Oklahoma City Thunder were going to explore a trade involving veteran guard Luguentz Dort. However, the team recently elected to pick up his $17.7 million contract option for the 2026–27 season.

That decision does not necessarily mean Dort will be in Oklahoma City forever. This could simply be Thunder general manager Sam Presti’s way of keeping his options open, ensuring Dort’s trade value remains at its highest before potentially moving him if the right opportunity presents itself.

The important thing here is that the Thunder are not in a rush to trade Dort. That matters because there is now a rookie two-way player in Otega Oweh who could potentially benefit from the roster flexibility.

The Thunder selected Oweh with the 41st overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft. He is known for his gritty playing style, defensive intensity, and ability to stretch the floor as a two-way player. His mentality fits perfectly within the Thunder’s culture, and he will undoubtedly compete, battle, and do everything possible to earn a roster spot.

The challenge for Oweh is that Oklahoma City’s roster is already loaded with talent. However, with the Thunder focused on avoiding the second apron, young players like Oweh become even more valuable. Affordable contracts will be crucial, and some of these younger players may be asked to step into meaningful roles within Mark Daigneault’s system.

The general consensus around Oweh is that if the 6-foot-5 guard can consistently knock down perimeter shots at a higher rate, he could eventually carve out a permanent role in an NBA rotation. Whether that opportunity comes in Oklahoma City remains to be seen, but there is certainly a path for him to make an impact.

Unfortunately, some tough news surfaced for Oweh during the fourth quarter of a Summer League matchup against the Atlanta Hawks. The severity of the injury remains unclear, but it appears he suffered a left ankle injury.

Justin Martinez of The Oklahoman provided Thunder fans with an update on the rookie’s status, sharing an image on social media that showed Oweh wearing a walking boot.

Obviously, this is not the ideal start to Oweh’s NBA journey. However, adversity is something the rookie is familiar with, and his reputation for toughness, mentality, and work ethic should serve him well.

For now, the injury will likely slow down his development process, but how Oweh responds could ultimately define the next chapter of his young career.
