I finally got my hands on the hottest basketball shoe out right now, the Converse SHAI 001, thanks to Converse, and it's even better than expected.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander's debut signature shoe is more than just a basketball shoe; it's a reflection of his style on and off the court. Every detail of the shoe feels like it was intentionally made to mirror Gilgeous-Alexander's vibe.

Even the details of the box, which display the words "two steps forward, one step back" for his signature midrange step back, add an extra level of touch that most players don't have for their shoe.

At first glance, the SHAI 001 stands out for its clean aesthetic. It’s minimal yet striking, built around sleek lines, subtle patterns, and a silhouette that feels both futuristic and timeless. There are no flashy logos or unnecessary textures. Instead, the design leans on simplicity and balance.

The shoe has the kind of elegance that doesn’t need to scream for attention, much like Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s game itself.

The materials contribute to that understated luxury. Made from neoprene, a synthetic rubber that’s known for its versatility, durability, and resistance to oil, heat, weather, and water.

The shroud is a premium short haired suede like material and also has a leather upper.

A mix of smooth leather and engineered mesh gives the shoe a refined look while keeping it lightweight. The cushioning system underneath is soft but responsive, designed for the same kind of fluid movement that defines Gilgeous-Alexander’s drives and pull-up jumpers.

Simply put, the shoe was made like it was supposed to be a luxury, high-dollar shoe.

The colorways add personality without overpowering the design, from the versatile “Butter” colorway or the warmer, more personal hues of the “Family Pack.”

There’s a distinct calmness to the SHAI 001 that separates it from most modern performance sneakers. It doesn’t chase trends; it sets them.

The shoe’s design language feels like an extension of Shai’s fashion sense, clean tailoring, neutral palettes, and attention to small, precise details. Whether paired with streetwear or worn on the court, it feels equally at home.

Even the branding reflects that restraint. The Converse and Gilgeous-Alexander logo is incorporated subtly, allowing the shape and texture of the shoe to take center stage. It’s a design that rewards a closer look, revealing layers of thoughtfulness in every curve and seam.

On top of all of this, the shoe feels amazing on the feet. Not heavy on the feet at all. It isn’t too tight and is true to size. Two qualities that are extremely important for a basketball shoe.

Ultimately, the SHAI 001 feels like a perfect embodiment of Shai Gilgeous-Alexander himself: smooth, confident and effortlessly cool.

It’s not about flash, it’s about feel. Converse and Gilgeous-Alexander have created a sneaker that looks as calm and collected as the player who inspired it, delivering a product that stands out by doing what Shai does best, making the hard look easy.
