With OKC’s stars sidelined, the explosive rookie steps into the spotlight. Discover how Oweh’s defensive tenacity and raw athleticism could carve a path through the Thunder’s deep roster.
The Oklahoma City Thunder will rest eight players during Tuesday’s preseason opener against the New Orleans Pelicans, creating an unusually large opportunity for rookie Otega Oweh. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Jalen Williams, Chet Holmgren and several established rotation players will watch from the sideline. Oweh, meanwhile, is expected to play after recovering from the lower-leg injury that shortened his Summer League experience.
Most fans will naturally focus on Aday Mara, Bennett Stirtz, Ajay Mitchell and Jared McCain. Each player carries a clearer path toward regular-season minutes. That makes Oweh the most intriguing wild card on the floor. Oklahoma City selected him with the 41st pick after he averaged 20.5 points and 1.8 steals during his final season at Kentucky. However, his first Thunder opportunity should not be judged exclusively by how many points he scores.
Mark Daigneault recently praised Oweh’s “electric athleticism” and described him as a player who makes things happen. That skill can sound vague, but it carries real value within Oklahoma City’s system. The Thunder create advantages by forcing turnovers, attacking unsettled defenses and playing with constant energy. Oweh possesses the strength and athletic ability to contribute within that identity before his offensive game becomes completely polished.
His perimeter shooting remains the primary question. Oweh connected on approximately 33% of his three-point attempts during his final collegiate season, which could make it difficult for him to immediately earn minutes on a championship contender. Tuesday provides an opportunity to show that he can affect possessions without needing the ball. Deflections, offensive rebounds, transition pressure and disciplined defense would tell Oklahoma City considerably more than an impressive scoring total against preseason competition.
Oweh is unlikely to secure a permanent rotation role during one exhibition game. The Thunder are simply too deep for that. However, roster opportunities often begin when a young player displays one undeniable NBA skill. Oweh’s athleticism could become that foundation if he consistently converts it into productive plays.
Oklahoma City does not need him to force shots or attempt to become the star of its temporary lineup. It needs him to create energy, pressure the Pelicans and make himself difficult to overlook. On a night without most of the Thunder’s familiar names, Oweh has the perfect opportunity to introduce himself.
More importantly, the performance could reveal whether Oklahoma City has uncovered another overlooked contributor capable of growing within its system. Many feel as if the Thunder got a great value pick with Oweh. Now they are about to find out.
