Oklahoma City bolstered its defensive depth by signing versatile wing Micah Peavy, a high-IQ former Hoya who reunites with teammate Thomas Sorber to fill a critical roster vacancy.
The Oklahoma City Thunder made a couple of moves that shake up the end of their roster on Saturday afternoon.
First, OKC waived 2026 2nd Round draft pick Otega Oweh. The shooting guard was selected by Oklahoma City with the 41st overall pick back in June. He played his first two years of college as a member of the Oklahoma Sooners before transferring to Kentucky. Unfortunately, Oweh suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon during overtime of a preseason game against the Indiana Pacers. The 23 year old rookie underwent successful repair surgery and will now begin the road to recovery. Here's hoping for a swift and full return to health and a return to the hardwood.
The Thunder front office then filled their two-way vacancy by signing former New Orleans Pelican guard Micah Peavy. The Houston, Texas native was originally selected with the #40 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft by the Washington Wizards and then traded to New Orleans. He appeared in 61 games, starting in four contests, last year with the Pelicans. As a rookie, Peavy averaged 4.3 points, 1.9 rebounds and 1.0 assists in 15 minutes per game.
Peavy is a good defender at a position of relative need for the Thunder. His 6'7" and 215 frame is ideal for defending wings, the one physical archetype that OKC does not have a surplus of on the roster. He does fit the Oklahoma City profile in that he is considered a high basketball IQ, high energy and high effort player.
It is clear that OKC lost one upside, versatile defender in Oweh and looked to replace that developmental spot with another in the same mold. While the defense is certainly the selling point for Peavy, there is at least one encouraging indicator for his outside shooting. He shot exactly 40% from 3 over 4.1 attempts per game in his final season at Georgetown.
Speaking of the Hoyas, Peavy had one new Thunder teammate who was especially excited to hear he signed a two-way deal in OKC. And it just happens to be an old teammate. Thomas Sorber and Peavy played together for one season at Georgetown before both were drafted to the NBA together in the same class.
Thunder fans will hopefully get to see the former Hoya duo on the court together at The Paycom Center sometime soon.
