After the Minnesota Timberwolves lost to the Denver Nuggets in a Western Conference clash on Nov. 15, star Anthony Edwards took accountability for his team’s loss.
Edwards kept it simple, saying the Nuggets scored down the stretch and his Timberwolves did not. He then ultimately shared his thoughts on his own performance.
“Nothing [the Nuggets] did,” Edwards said in a postgame interview. “I gotta make my shots. It’s just that simple, yeah. Just missed a bunch of shots. Go to the gym tomorrow, hopefully make them.”
Edwards did wind up with 26 points against Denver, but did not have a strong shooting night as he alluded to. He went just 8-for-23 from the field and did not make any 3-pointers, going 0-for-8 throughout the game. The majority of Edwards’ points came from the charity stripe, where he went 10-for-12.
“It don’t matter what shots I take,” Edwards said. “I gotta make them.”
Edwards did impact the game in other ways, however, as, in addition to his 26 points, he also grabbed eight rebounds and tallied six assists, as well as three steals and two blocks. But, as he said, the shooting was not there in the way that it usually is for Minnesota’s 24-year-old all-star.
The Timberwolves controlled things early and held a 60-55 halftime lead. The second half, though, was where that lead began to slip away, and the fourth quarter saw Denver pull ahead, outscoring Minnesota 36-26 across those final 12 minutes.
Other Timberwolves who contributed to Minnesota’s scoring efforts were Julius Randle, who scored 26 points alongside Edwards, and Naz Reid, who scored 19 points off the bench, hitting four of seven 3-pointers to follow up a game in which he struggled against the Kings.
“That’s why I’m pissed,” Edwards said. “[Reid] had a big game tonight and we couldn’t pull it out for him. So, I blame myself for this one.
Despite Edwards’ subpar night from the field, he is averaging 27.3 points per game on 47.6% shooting this season, still proving to be one of the more difficult matchups for opponents across the league.
The Timberwolves, who had won four consecutive games heading into the game against the Nuggets, will take on Cooper Flagg and company in the Dallas Mavericks at home on Nov. 17, where they will attempt to start another winning streak and improve to 9-5 on the young season.
