The Minnesota Timberwolves got off to a strong start to the 2025-26 season, but that didn't mean there weren't some areas of weakness to iron out. The team's defense has really improved over the last couple of games, especially their defense in the fourth quarter. However, the point guard position looks to finally have a resolution.
With Mike Conley regressing this season and the absence of Nickeil Alexander-Walker, the Timberwolves have started to look toward Bones Hyland, especially with Rob Dillingham not ready to take that jump just yet. Coming off an 18-point game in his first healthy start of the season, Hyland wants fans to know he brings more than just his bucket-getting skillset.
"Yeah, I feel like I'm very versatile. It can go either way. It's really whatever we need. If it's me scoring, if it's me passing. I feel like I'm a very underrated passer as well. I don't get a lot of credit for that, but that's cool as long as I believe, as long as coaches believe too as well in my abilities," Hyland said.
Hyland was tagged as a scorer during his time with the Nuggets, where he averaged nearly 10 shot attempts per game over his four years there, but it didn't come at great efficiency. However, his career assist percentage sits at 22.5%, which would rank inside the Top 50 of the NBA this season.
"It can go either way, whether it's me scoring or whether it's me passing, getting everybody else involved," Hyland added.
Hyland is on a one-year deal with the Timberwolves, and the time is now for him to bolster his value and become a sought-after free agent come this summer. Whether the team keeps in the starting lineup ahead of Donte DiVincenzo remains a question, but he should have a significant role regardless of where he's playing.
Additionally, if the team is keen on keeping Hyland around and he finishes the season out strong, perhaps the Timberwolves will use the asset of Dillingham to move him for a position of need to bolster this team for another run at the Western Conference Finals.
Regardless, it's been a small sample size from Hyland, all be it a positive one given their guard situation. The Timberwolves are set to return to action on Wednesday against the Memphis Grizzlies, as Hyland's role will be one to monitor if Anthony Edwards makes his return to the lineup.
