Former NBA star DeMarcus Cousins proposed the idea on Saturday that, following Ja Morant's recent frustration with the Memphis Grizzlies, the two-time All-Star would be better off with the Minnesota Timberwolves or Houston Rockets. Morant was recently suspended one game for "conduct detrimental to the team."
Pairing that with Morant's comments after the team's loss to the Los Angeles Lakers, perhaps the Morant era in Memphis could be coming to an end. While the Rockets would surely be an exciting destination, they already have plenty of mouths to feed, and adding another ball-handler isn't what they need. However, the Timberwolves make a lot of sense.
If Morant were to get traded from the Grizzlies to the Timberwolves, a trade could look like the following:
Memphis Grizzlies receive: Naz Reid, Rob Dillingham, Donte DiVincenzo, Mike Conley, three second-round picks
Minnesota Timberwolves receive: Ja Morant, Zach Edey, and Vince Williams Jr.
The trade wouldn't be able to be processed until Naz Reid's restrictions are lifted in January due to him signing an extension this offseason. However, this matches up the salaries and gives Memphis a center to build around in Naz Reid, who should pair well offensively next to Jaren Jackson Jr. as both can stretch the floor.
Given the Timberwolves' lack of draft capital, it's hard to say they'd have the best trade package out there to go and trade for Morant. However, they can offer the Grizzlies some win-now pieces in Reid, DiVincenzo, and Conley that can allow them to stay competitive.
Additionally, Dillingham wouldn't have much pressure to play right away, especially since Scotty Pippen Jr. would likely be back from injury by the time this deal could even be processed. Playing behind Pippen Jr. and Ty Jerome, Dillingham could focus on growing with the younger pieces on this Grizzlies roster. They'd also add some second-round picks, which doesn't hurt.
Going from Reid to Edey would be a major drop-off in offensive production from the center position, but first-round pick Joan Beringer has shown some flashes and could step into a significant role as early as next season.
Adding Morant would give the Timberwolves a major three-headed attack with Anthony Edwards and Julius Randle. Given how competitive the Western Conference is, shedding some depth to create a dynamic scoring big three could help them finally get over the hump of the Western Conference Finals.
