The Minnesota Timberwolves were represented well at All-Star weekend, even though they just had one participant. Anthony Edwards put on a show with Team USA Stars, leading them to a victory in the NBA's new All-Star Game format, as Edwards scored 32 total points to secure the All-Star Game MVP honors.
A moment that continued to put Edwards on the map as arguably the best American player in the NBA right now, there was also a moment that caught the attention of fans on social media. There are always rumors about star players on whether they may get traded or not, but the All-Star weekend saw the first speculation about Edwards.
After Team USA Stars took home the win in the All-Star Game, Edwards went up to Atlanta Hawks All-Star Jalen Johnson, telling him, "I can’t wait to come home."
It's a moment that went viral in the NBA world, but does need some context. While Edwards did discreetly tell Johnson that, Edwards was born in Atlanta, Georgia, and played college basketball at the University of Georgia. Therefore, Georgia is his home, regardless of whether he has an interest in playing there or not.
However, that didn't stop media members from asking Edwards about the interaction after Friday night's win over the Dallas Mavericks.
"I don’t think it’s nothing for real, it wasn’t too much, I’ve been knowing Jalen Johnson for a long time, that’s my dog, we were just having a conversation I’m happy where I’m at," Edwards said.
To no surprise, Edwards shut it down, attributing it to his relationship with Johnson. The Hawks and Timberwolves have already played this season, most recently on February 9th and back on December 31st in Atlanta.
Additionally, Edwards spoke about his love for Minnesota and how they embraced him when he was brought in.
“They embraced me, a lot of people didn’t think I was worthy of the number one pick, and they did, I think that’s the main thing,” he added.
Edwards' draft year was a complicated one, with the pandemic, but he ended up being far and away the best choice as the first overall pick.
For those wondering if Edwards could be on his way out, he's still under contract through the 2028-29 season, meaning the earliest he could leave without a trade would be the 2029 offseason. However, with Minnesota having back-to-back Western Conference Finals appearances, it's hard to say there are many better situations.
That doesn't mean that Edwards won't eventually make his way back to play for his hometown, especially since the Hawks haven't won a championship since moving to Atlanta (their lone title came in 1958 as the St. Louis Hawks).
