The Minnesota Timberwolves returned to the floor on Friday against the Dallas Mavericks, picking up a 122-111 victory.
The Timberwolves were led by Anthony Edwards, who scored 40 points on 16-30 from the field and 5-13 from three.
Edwards closed out the game for the Timberwolves, scoring 14 points in the fourth on 6-8 shooting and 2-4 from three.
After the game, Edwards was asked about his 40-point game and his clutch shot-making.
The Wolves All-Star credited his head coach, Chris Finch, saying. "[Finch], I'm not going to lie, he's the toughest coach I've ever had. It works out in my favor because he tells me what I need to work on and get better at. This past summer, he told me I needed a go-to shot at the end of games. I was working on that all summer, finding my spots, getting to spots I'm comfortable in. He's a big part of my success."
The game was still up for grabs in the fourth quarter, tied at 103 with seven minutes left. Coming out of a timeout, Edwards re-entered the game, hit a stepback three, and the Wolves never trailed again.
A Naz Reid three-pointer pushed the game to 109-105, and a nifty driving scoop shot by Edwards over the outstretched arm of Daniel Gafford put the Wolves up six.
With no Cooper Flagg, the Mavericks failed to generate any true offense down the stretch, and the Wolves locked in on that end of the court to stifle Dallas. Edwards would score the next six points for his squad, pushing the lead to 117-109 with just over a minute remaining, effectively icing the game.
One more three, and an exclamation point dunk by Rudy Gobert after Reid blocked a three-point attempt by Klay Thompson ended things.
While Edwards led the team in scoring, it was the big men of Minnesota who really dominated the game.
Naz Reid and Rudy Gobert combined for 43 points, with Reid scoring 21 and Gobert scoring 22. Julius Randle also chipped in with 13 points. No one else on Minnesota scored in double figures.
Reid also had seven rebounds, while Gobert had 17 rebounds.
As expected, Gobert did most of his work in the paint, going 9-11 from the field and 4-8 from the free throw line. Reid showed off his range, shooting 4-8 from three with his other four field goals coming in the paint.
The difference in the game was the three-point line, where the Timberwolves doubled up the Mavericks in the number of makes.
The Mavs shot 32% from beyond the arc, hitting eight of 25. The Wolves went 16-42 from deep, good enough for 38%.
The only person who took a three but didn't make one was Gobert, who launched a rare three with 21 seconds and the game already decided. He is now 0-3 from three on the season and 0-19 in his career.
Edwards hit five threes, Reid hit four, and Donte DiVincenzo went 3-5.
With this win, the Timberwolves are now 35-22. They'll be back in action on Sunday at home against the Philadelphia 76ers.
