The Minnesota Timberwolves went all-in on acquiring Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo, trading away Mike Conley in a salary-dump trade to free up space. In the end, the two-time MVP stayed put, and it's not a reach to say that it affected the roster, given that multiple key players would've been dealt.
Since the deadline has passed, the Timberwolves are 0-2, with losses to the New Orleans Pelicans and the Los Angeles Clippers. While Anthony Edwards has been putting up points, it's clear the rest of the team just isn't there right now mentally.
In the team's most recent loss to the Clippers, the Timberwolves shot 45% from the field and 24% from three-point range. Edwards led the way with 23 points, but there weren't many other notable offensive performances around him, as Julius Randle had 17 points but shot just 1-of-5 from three-point range.
Regardless, Edwards shared after the game that he thought the team's energy was in the right place.
“Yeah, for everybody. I feel like we had good energy today, I feel like the offense just wasn’t goin’ for us, especially myself, so I have nothin’ to say about our defense. I think we did a pretty good job tonight; it’s just we couldn’t score the ball," Edwards said.
The Timberwolves' season has been marked by inconsistency, so perhaps the All-Star break is exactly what this team needs. They still have two more matchups before then, matching up against the Atlanta Hawks and Portland Trail Blazers, as both contests should be games in which Minnesota can secure wins.
Holding the sixth seed in the Western Conference entering Monday's NBA slate, the Timberwolves aren't far away from climbing all the way up to the third seed. However, they also aren't far away from dropping to the seventh seed and being close to the mix of the bottom half of the play-in teams.
At this point, the only change to this Timberwolves roster will be the addition of Mike Conley, once they are able to bring him back after being waived by the Charlotte Hornets. His veteran presence in the locker room can't be overlooked, as it should play a key part.
Additionally, the team needs to lead by example and continue asserting itself on defense. They do have strong offensive options like Edwards and Randle, but this team's identity has been their defensive-first mindset.
Hopefully, everything gets sorted out during the All-Star break. If not, their hopes of making another Western Conference Finals seem rather slim.
