Do the Timberwolves have enough to lure LeBron James?
LeBron James remains an unrestricted free agent as the basketball world waits on "The King" to make a decision.
Eight teams have been at the forefront of LeBron's latest decision with the Cleveland Warriors, Philadelphia 76ers, Miami Heat, New York Knicks, San Antonio Spurs, Denver Nuggets, Minnesota Timberwolves and Golden State Warriors being known teams interested in LeBron.
The Nuggets, Spurs, and Knicks have seemingly fallen behind in the race for LeBron's services, but the other five teams remain in the conversation, and some of put their offseason plans on hold as they wait to see where LeBron ends up.
Minnesota Timberwolves Are Making A Pitch
According to Jon Krawczynski of The Athletic, LaMelo Ball and Anthony Edwards have both called LeBron about the possibility of joining the Timberwolves.
Edwards is the face of the franchise, having been there since he was drafted by the organization first overall in 2020.
Ball has yet to play a game for the Timberwolves as he was acquired this offseason in exchange for Naz Reid and draft compensation.
Having the two top players on the team reach out to LeBron shows how serious they are about wanting to play alongside LeBron in hopes of getting over the hump and winning a championship.
LeBron's agent, Rich Paul, listed Edwards, Ball, Jaden McDaniels, and Rudy Gobert as reasons LeBron might join Minnesota when he listed them on the whiteboard at the beginning of free agency.
How Does LeBron Fit?
Of all the teams left, the Timberwolves offer LeBron the best basketball situation.
They need a power forward. Right now, either McDaniels would be an undersized starting power forward, putting Ayo Dosunmu at small forward, and hurting the bench depth of the Timberwolves.
If they want to keep their bench depth by having Ayo as the top reserve, they would have to start Trey Lyles, who didn't play in the NBA last season and has to prove that his shooting overseas (44% from three in Euroleague, 39% from three in Liga ACB) can travel back to the NBA, where he's a career 34% shooter from three.
Starting LeBron at power forward would keep Ayo as the top bench player and would take pressure off of Lyles and Joan Beringer, who are the top frontcourt options next to Rudy Gobert at the moment.
On top of positional fit, LeBron's skillset fits with the current starting four as he spacing benefits Ball and Edwards, his playmaking benefits everyone, he can still turn it up in on defense, and he's a leader in the locker room.
