Anthony Edwards is excited for Jonathan Kuminga to join the team.
The Minnesota Timberwolves completed their starting lineup late in the offseason when they signed Jonathan Kuminga to serve as the starting power forward.
The Timberwolves revamped the starting lineup almost immediately in the offseason when they salary-dumped Julius Randle to the Brooklyn Nets, attaching a first-round pick to get back a second-round pick.
It looked like Naz Reid would slide up into the starting position, but he was traded to the Charlotte Hornets in exchange for LaMelo Ball.
The Timberwolves chased LeBron James to be the fifth starter alongside Ball, Anthony Edwards, Jaden McDaniels, and Rudy Gobert, but he opted to sign with the Philadelphia 76ers.
Kuminga had interest from the Los Angeles Lakers, but opted to sign a two-year, $12 million deal with a player option to be in Minnesota.
Anthony Edwards Speaks
Anthony Edwards is excited about the addition of Kuminga, saying, “Ya'll see what's going on. This sh*t over, man. Wrap this sh*t up. This sh*t over this year, man.”
Edwards has never been one to lack confidence, often seen trash-talking his fellow competitors on the court during the heat of the game. Kuminga’s presence has given the Timberwolves a better chance to win a championship than they had prior to his signing, when it looked like Trey Lyles might be the starting power forward, or they would go small with Ayo Dosunmu entering the starting lineup.
Kuminga is a versatile player who can guard multiple positions and uses his athleticism on offense to get to the rim and run in transition. While there are spacing concerns, the shooting of Ball and Edwards should alleviate the lack of spacing with Kuminga and Gobert. The Timberwolves didn’t exactly have the most floor space with Randle and Gobert on the floor either, so it’s a problem they have solved in the past.
Is It Really Wrapped Up?
Of course not, and Edwards knows that as well.
The West will be very competitive once again, and until teams can prove they are better than the San Antonio Spurs and Oklahoma City Thunder, they will remain at the top of the conference.
The addition of Kuminga does keep the Timberwolves in the same class as the Denver Nuggets, Los Angeles Lakers, and Houston Rockets. Those four teams will once again battle it out for the 3-6 spots, and the Timberwolves have to like their chances with their current starting lineup.
