Ayo Dosunmu came over to the Minnesota Timberwolves at the deadline via a trade with the Chicago Bulls and immediately made an impact.

Strictly with Minnesota, Dosunmu averaged 14.4 points, 4.2 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game in 24 games, nine of which he started, and was a dynamic player coming off the bench that added a new gear of excitement to an already electric Minnesota offense.

It was a surprising trade when it first happened, but as the weeks went on Dosunmu fit in seamlessly with the rest of the team, as if he'd been there from the start, and he was a major piece in the Timberwolves' success in the second half of the season.

Now, Dosunmu is an unrestricted free agent and his future is wide open. He brought a big spotlight onto himself when he came over to Minnesota and that spotlight should greatly enhance his options now.

Dosunmu's Future

In his exit interview at the end of this season, Dosunmu spoke about his upcoming free agency and what his future might hold.

He began by praising the Timberwolves and expressing his gratitude for the few months that he spent with the team. He was thankful to not just the team, but the fans and the community, for embracing him the way that they had and for making him feel so at home.

Following that, he also said that he was looking forward to free agency and the freedom that's going to come with an unrestricted status.

"I'm excited, also, for free agency. Being in the league for five years, this is my first time being able to actually go through a free agency unrestricted, so I'm looking forward to that," Dosunmu said (via Timberwolves). "At the same time, my time here, these two, three months I was here with Minnesota has been great."

Navigating Free Agency

Dosunmu's praise of Minnesota can be interpreted a number of ways. It could be simple polite courtesy at the end of a season or it could be a genuine endorsement of the team that can lead him to a sense of loyalty to the team that could help Minnesota's chances of retaining him in the offseason.

Expressing his interest in free agency is also a smart business move for Dosunmu. As he said, this is the first real chance in his career for him to decide his own fate in free agency and as happy as he was in Minnesota or how willing he might be to sign with the team, he's not going to limit his own negotiating power.

It will be an interesting offseason for Dosunmu and based on the way he played this past season, he should have plenty of options.
